Love this service: Jott.com

Jott_logo_copy_3

It's a very clever and oh-so-simple reminder service. Jott.com. Get it? As in Jot it Down? And it's absolutely free. Here's how it works: you call the provided 800 number. You leave yourself a message. The message is automatically transcribed in text and then delivered to your email inbox. You can Jott to yourself or to anyone else in your group.

Jott_copy

Imagine how useful this is. If you're like me, you are invariably thinking about your crucial To Do List item and your latest genius idea when you are nowhere near your computer or calendar or notepad. I have been using Jott.com a lot now and have put my husband and kids on it as well. It is also particularly useful to get your whole team updated on a particular subject all at once. Kinda like an email CC list for your phone.

Love it.

Stevia Sweetener

Since most of the people that I mention it to have never heard about it, I thought it was time to share about the herb Stevia that I use as a sweetener. You probably have not heard about it for a good reason. It was not available here in the US until a few years ago.

Stevia is actually is South American plant that has been used by the Guarani Indians of Paraguay forStevia_2 hundreds of years. The Japanese started cultivating Stevia in the 1970’s as an alternative to artificial sweeteners, aka suspected carcinogens. But here in the US, the herb was banned in the early 1990’s at the request of an anonymous complaint. The FDA labeled stevia as an "unsafe food additive" and restricted its import. There is evidence that the FDA acted in response to industry pressure. I wonder from whom. Hummmm…

Stevia is 300 times sweeter than fructose (table sugar) so a little bit goes a long way. I pay $9.99 at Trader Joe’s for this little bottle but it contains 1120 servings. If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s in you neighborhood, you can buy it here from the manufacturer.

Anyhoo, I have been using Stevia for about three years now, mostly in my coffee, tea and lemonade. Actually, a Stevia lemonade is my favorite summer drink. My 2 second recipe is so simple: all I do is fill a glass with ice cold water, squeeze in a lemon (or a couple splashes of Realemon if you’re in a bind) and add a tiny sprinkle of Stevia. Mix and drink. And lemon juice is great for us blood type A’s. Stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose and even enhance glucose tolerance, which might be an additional reason that I so enjoy drinking the Pure Invention Tea extracts that contain it. Makes me feel good and has a way of satisfied that craving for a “little something sweet”.

Ahhh, Stevia… You can read up on Stevia on Wikipedia and on SteviaInfo.

Banksy - The Anonymous Guerilla Graffiti Artist with a Message

Also called the "Art Terrorist" famous to daubing politicized images on buildings in London, L.A. and other metropolises.

Love this guy. Street art with a message that very few others can communicate in such a clever and impactful ways. Banksy's anonymity obviously lends some charm and even credibility to the stunts.  Actually it seems that the targeted buildings enjoy being a platform to convey the truly cynical yet truth-hurts messages.

Balloongirl2_3 Bucketboys_2

Wikipedia says it best: “His artworks are often satirical pieces of art which encompass topics from politics, culture, and ethics. His street art, which combines graffiti with a distinctive stencilling technique, has appeared in London and in cities around the world.” I love his interpretations of classic paintings.

Carwreck Crudeoil

Banksy has also claimed responsibility for a number of high profile stunts, including the following: He put up a subverted painting in London's Tate Britain gallery. And, as we all heard about here, last August 2006, Banksy replaced up to 500 copies of Paris Hilton's debut CD, Paris, in 48 different UK record stores with his own cover art and remixes by Danger Mouse. Music tracks were given titles such as "Why am I Famous?", "What Have I Done?" and "What Am I For?". Several copies of the CD were purchased by the public before stores were able to remove them, some going on to be sold for as much as £750 on online auction websites such as eBay. The cover art depicted Paris Hilton digitally altered to appear topless. Other pictures feature her with a dog's head replacing her own, and one of her stepping out of a luxury car, edited to include a group of homeless people, which included the caption 90% of success is just showing up. That was too much fun. I wonder if he'll do anything now that she is actually in prison.

How 'bout this one that features the elephant in the room that everyone ignores?

La_tai4_2

Or this one that says a couple of things about our apparent disregard for  impoverished countries:

Feedtheworld2_3

I love that you can download his art for free: www.banksy.co.uk/shop/index.html. As he states on his website, everything in the shop is free. All the images can be downloaded to print or to use as a desktop. There is even this little subservient suggestion: “Prints look best when done on gloss paper using the company printer ink when everyone else is at lunch.”

This one certainly hits home these days:

A Must Read Article in Today's New York Times: The Unintended Consequences of Hyperhydration

27bottle6001

Quite the awakening article on America’s exaggerated use of the disposable water bottle .  You will find below some fascinating excerpts to the article written by Jon Mooallem, a contributing writer with the New York Times. This full NY Times magazine article can be found HERE .

The article is mostly about the fact that the Bottle Bill (which in some states refund a nickel for every returned bottle) does NOT cover water bottles and about all the complications in the chanels between manufacturer, distributor, retailer and consumer to arrive at some working solution to handle all this waste. Anyhoo, read on and get enlightened:

"Bottle bills are still surprisingly good at inspiring recycling and reducing litter. But, though they are idiosyncratic in every state, the vast majority of the laws share one colossal, unanticipated flaw: they place a deposit on beer and carbonated beverages only. The bottle bill’s scope, and to some extent the very vision of a more waste-conscious world that first motivated it, has been swiftly trivialized by the ubiquity of bottled water. This year, Americans will drink more than 30 billion single-serving bottles of water. Oregonians will throw out about 170 million empty ones. Those same bottles, filled with something fizzy, would carry nickel deposits."   ...

"The laws were written in a different era, a less health-obsessed one, when drinking out of a bottle or can meant drinking beer or soda."   ...

"Americans buy about 215 billion beverage containers every year, more than quadruple those bought in 1971."      ...

"In her office one morning, Vicki Berger seemed to share this principled insensitivity. When it comes to bottled water, she said, “when are we going to say enough is enough of this product?” (Berger had previously explained her position on water this way: “The product is zilch! You’re buying a friggin’ container!”)"     ....

"Americans will throw out more than two million tons of PET bottles this year. Even when recycled, it is hard to turn scrap PET into new bottles. More virgin material is always necessary. PET is a petroleum product; it comes from oil. The Container Recycling Institute estimates that 18 million barrels of crude-oil equivalent were needed to replace the bottles we chucked in 2005, bottles that were likely shipped long distances to begin with —from Maine or Calistoga or Fiji."

Oy! I’m guilty of it myself. I buy the 24 pack of 24 oz water bottles. The kids each grab a bottle in the morning on their way to school. What has somewhat alleviated my guilt over consuming all that plastic is that my family recycles like no other  in our community. Yep, we are the ones with the overflowing recycling curbside bins, while my neighbors hardly ever put theirs out. I even bring back my recycling from the office. So does my husband. But this article sure sheds a bright light on this issue and brought on a new decision for me and my family. I am buying sturdy, refillable, dishwasher proof (these bottles, put directly in our mouths accumulate lots of bacteria and need to be washed frequently) bottle for the whole family and we will be taking the time to refill them with our own tap water. I will look to find the best water bottle and will share that with you so that you can buy your own in my store, www.TheSucculentWife.com. Stay tuned for that part.

In fact, I don’t remember ever being this thirsty as a child. Do you? My parents don’t remember needed to carry water bottles on every errand or every car trip we took.  It’s time for us to rethink all this…

The Philip Johnson Glass House - Opening June 23, 2007

I have been come across this "story" in 3 different magazines just this past weekend. So, in case, this is news to you, here is the scoop about this now historic gem.

Glass_house

The Philip Johnson's Glass House, is one of 28 National Trust Historic Sites. It was a remarkable achievement when it was completed in 1949 and still looks stunning today and fills me with wonderment. Its exterior walls are of glass with no interior walls touching the exterior. The 47 acre estate in New Canaan, Connecticut includes 11 structures. Among them, the Guest House, Lake Pavilion, Painting Gallery, Sculpture Gallery, Ghost House, Studio, and Visitors Pavilion. And let’s not forget the sculpted gardens.

A visit to this site, or should I say a pilgrimage for some, would be the best way to appreciate this legendary Modernist architect's life work. Opens June 23 and already sold out through August 2007. Hurry, there are only 50 visitors allowed each day!

My Fashion Splurge This Summer: the Belette Dress by Diane von Furstenberg

I love Diane von Furstenberg's dresses. I bought my first wrap dress of hers about 6 years ago. I think that this was when they were still in "comeback" stage. I wear it proudly to this day. Not so many other items in my closet that I can say that about!

This summer I got the Belette (What does that mean? I know that it translates to Ferrett or Weasel from French, but that's just too weird and unflatering a name?!?!?!  ) dress in white eyelet. Yes, even despite the name... And despite the fact that, as a Canadian native, the idea of buying a WHITE dress is pure madness, because when you live in Canada, you'd be lucky if the weather was nice enough to allow you to wear it just once. But I live in Las Vegas now, and I will wear it plenty. And look much happier than the model in these pictures.  And, unfortunately I will also be filling this dress out much more. than the model.  Oy!

Oh, I got it at ShopBop.

My Favorite Quote Ever

From Marianne Williamson's book, "A Return to Love: Reflections on the Principles of "A Course in Miracles".

Mw_head07_02 “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.  Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.   It is our Light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us.  We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?  Actually, who are you NOT to be?  Your playing small does not serve the world.  There is nothing enlightening about shrinking so that other people won’t feel unsure around you.  We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.  It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.  As we let our own Light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.  As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates other.”

I continuously refer to this quote and was discussing it again with friends a couple of nights again, which reminded me to share it on this blog. Even if you've already read it a thousand times, you need to read it AGAIN!. It's still a great reminder that we can become as splendid as we choose to be. Thank you Marianne Williamson!

Aubergine is my New Black

Aubergine, Eggplant, Mauve, Plum, Purple, Mulberry, Pomegranate, Violet... Whatever you call it, this color rocks!

I bought this bag, pretty much as a last ditch attempt to replace my former one that was falling apart.  I hardly have time to shop, so scouring the malls to find my new favorite handbag was not an option at the time .  I have one handbag. Well, ok, I have several, but is really only ever use one. I don't have the time either to change handbags every morning. So, I do just use one handbag until that handbag is no more, cast away for being worn for having served me too well.

I have rediscovered Cole Haan (short tangent here) a few years ago when they came out with the GSeries and fell in love with their new look.  I think that it's at the affordable end of luxury goods, plus they don't plaster their logo all over their designs (see? It's hardly discernible on the photo). I've always said that if I'm going to walk around with huge logos on my stuff, that implies that I'm advertising YOUR brand, you pay ME. Not the other way around. Anyhoo, Cole Haan is subtle about their logo display and I like that.  The simple point of all this is that I bought the handbag that you see below while I was shopping at the Off 5th outlet with an out of town guest (always bring out of towners to the outlet malls). And, being on the lookout to replace my previous war torn Cole Haan, I spotted this little piece. I questioned the color ( apparently so did everyone else, or it wouldn't have been on that shelf!). But the bargain basement pricing had me give it careful consideration. I did take it home and looooooove it. The color absolutely goes with everything! Complements black, takes on brown tones when it needs to and harmonizes perfectly with all other colors. Who knew? Well, I know now, so thought I'd share and give you another color to pick for your accessories beyond the basic black.  You should try it!

10x10 / 100 Words and Pictures: How I Get my World News

"10x10™ ('ten by ten') is an interactive exploration of the words and pictures that define the time. The result is an often moving, sometimes shocking, occasionally frivolous, but always fitting snapshot of our world."

10_x_10

This has been my browser's homepage for a little over a year now. I don't think of as anything unique anymore until someone comes by my desk as I open my browser and asks me "What's that?" Then I realize that it is something special and is, in fact, how I get most of my world news (a lot of it is BBC).

You can read more this news feed here, but in a nutshell, the page shows you 100 thumbnail - 10 x 10 - photos that feature the top 100 news stories of the hour. Each thmbnail is clickable and reveals the underlying story in a series of listed links.  No human editors.

Try it. It will make you look very smart and wordly when someone walks by your desk and sees this displayed there. Smart, that a big part of your aura of style, no?

The SingelRingen - A Tool for Singles

Big_ring_photo I can't relate. Have been married (to the same wonderful man) for almost 19 years, but I know that a few of my friends might find this a useful tool -- in certain environments! Whether one celebrates being single or needs to "advertise" that the fact, the Singelringen (in Swedish, where the company is from) is a cute and potentially very effective concept. As the Web site says: "There are engagement rings and wedding rings, but there was no such thing as a ring for single men and women. Why not? If anyone needs to signal one’s civil status, it’s a Single."

The unisex ring is made of an outer band of turquoise acrylic melded to an inner band of solid sterling silver. It's $55.00 including postage and packing and comes with a unique registration number that one may use to join the Global Singelringen Community which also offers an international networking place for singles. They represent 50 nationalities. Hummmmm, almost makes me want to be single again. Almost almost.

M.A.C Cosmetics Lipstick in Twig. Can't live without it

Twig_2 I have been wearing the M.A.C Twig lipstick  (s soft muted brownish pink in satin finish) for about 14 or 15 years. That's my low estimate. It's my perfect neutral lipstick that actually has color. Or the effect of color? Or the effect of neutral? Either way, I came to the clear realization this morning that I cannot live without this color. I have been resisting it in the last couple of years. You know, because I'm afraid of looking like the old lady walking around with the same pale blue eyeshadow that she has been wearing for 1972. No one tells her how outdated she looks, so she still wears it. Yes, you know the one. She also has crimped hair, dyed black, with curly cues. ..

Well, I am mortified at the idea of turning into one of those ladies, that forgets that time passes by and that things need to change. Usually, I love change. Even crave it. So, I thought it was wrong that I should be clinging to this same lipstick all this time. I tried so many other alternatives. All the brands that had a "neutal". Every single one. Even the Viva Glam colors, of which ALL sales proceeds go to the MAC AIDS Funds. No other did it. The Twig is matte, has staying power and goes with EVERYTHING. So, as I applied Twig -- again -- this morning, along with its perfect companion, the Spice lip liner, I surrendered. Completely. From this point on, I will be wearing my Twig MAC lipstick as often as I wish, without guilt or self-reproach. Hey, if they're still making it, must still be cool. Enough.

The Venice Biennale - A must if you can make it

I haven't checked to see if the Venice Biennale is on the list of "1000 Place to See Before You Die" book, but it should.

Banner52eia

The 2007 exhibition is the 52nd of such to held in Venice every two years. The first one happened in 1895 and has been promoting contemporary and modern art ever since.

It is an inspiring exhibit that touched us to the core when we visited with the kids two years ago. Whether we loved what we saw, hated it, rolled our eyes or were in awe, this was an impactful experience for the kids (ok, for us too) who still talk about it regularly.

Map0100_2 This 52nd International Art Exhibition will take place from June 10 to November 21, 2007 and will display the works of about 100 artists and groups. The theme, "Think with the Senses - Feel with the Mind", is predicated on the conviction that art is now, as it has always been, the means by which humans are made aware of the whole of their being.

The exhibition venues are held in the Italian Pavilion and the national  pavilions at the Giardini, as well as the Corderie, the Artiglierie and other venues at the Arsenale.Besides these main exhibit areas, Venice is dotted with impromptu venues. We fondly remember walking into a dark repurposed renaissance church, taking off our shoes and walking to the center of the building and then lie on colorful mattresses to watch the video display on the ceiling. Where else could we have done this?

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap...Box

A little late in the game, I guess, but I just learned that there is a documentary film coming out in June about the life and Dr. Bronner.

Dr

You have all seen his soaps and other products and have spent some time in the soap isles trying toPeppermint_soap decipher the multiple messages, quotes and musings printed on every spare space of the label which covers every flat space of the soap bottle. Personally, I love the Organic Peppermint liquid soap which I pick up at Trader Joe's (my second home). Nothing better to wake up with in the shower in the morning, and feel the cool tingle that the soap brings to the skin. Wake Up!

Sometimes portrayed as somewhat of a lunatic, Dr. Bronner was actually also quite the avant-gardiste, shying away from chemically produced soaps and establishing his own plant to manufacture ecological castile soaps starting in the late 1940's. You can read more about that story here on the official Web site.

Dr. Bronner left behind a legacy that promotes a socially innovative and responsible company that participates in, among other things, charitable gifting, advantageous employee benefit plans, fair trade programs, no animal testing and in using hemp as sustainable alternative material.

Anyhoo, this should make for an interesting documentary. Since I have no false hope to ever seeing this being shown in Las Vegas, it's going on my Netflix list.

Birthday Wishes for Homeless Children

Birthday_wishes

I can't remember how I heard about this organization a while ago, but I remember making a note, knowing that I would want to refer to it in my yet-to-be blog. BirthdayWishes.org is a simple concept that certainly tugs at the heartstrings. www.BirthdayWishes.org is the only organization that brings birthday parties to homeless children. That's its  only mission.

Birthdays are important milestones in a child’s life and, Lisa Vasiloff, Karen Yahara, and Carol Zwanger, the three founders of the organization, believe that the gift of a birthday party provides normalcy, joy and hope in the otherwise unsettled lives of children living in homeless shelters. Indeed, for homeless children, birthday parties are a luxury that neither the parent nor the shelter can afford.

BirtdayWishes.org currently only operates in Massachussets but that should not stop those living out of the area to contribute to this cause. It's easy to help by donating items on the wish list http://birthdaywishes.org/wishlist.html, or shop your next Amazon.com purchase through the link on this page and Amazon.com will donate 10% of the order's total. That's quite the deal.

I think this needs to be launched in every major city. Who's in?

Pencils Smencils!

I bought my first Smencils  (for the kids,  I thought) when I visited one of Las Vegas' loveliest shops, the Las Vegas Paper Doll Stationery Shop owned by Anne Kellogg. Boy, does she ever have an eye for cute stuff.

Gourmetscentedpencils And, one of the totally cute and perfectly priced impulse items in the store are the Smencils ($2 ea.), scented pencils made out of recycled newspaper. As the company itself advertises, they are saving trees, one pencil at a time. Fannedtubes5_2 Indeed, it would appear that  Smencils are healthy for the environment. To be precise, Smencils are manufactured from recycled newspapers, environmentally friendly fragrances, recyclable ferrules and biodegradable erasers. Their Gourmet scents include Cherry, Cinnamon, Bubble Gum, Pineapple, Orange, Grape, Fruit Punch, Root Beer, Watermelon and Peppermint. Yummm! But, wait... no Chocolate? I'll need to write to them.

You can make your own Smencils with the Home Kit. Fun activity with the kids and it appears that this is a popular product for fundraisers as well.

Come Christmas, this will be the cutest stocking stuffer around!

Gimme Kama Sutra

The Kama Sutra Company was started over thirty years ago and while the inspiration for the company's name came from the 4th century Indian text on lovemaking - the Kama Sutra of Vatsayayana - their purpose is thoroughly modern.

The Kama Sutra Company's purpose is very focused: to help loving couples create joyful experiences of intimacy and tenderness. They believe - and I think it makes perfect sense - that through such intimacy, physically and emotionally healthier human beings emerge, who in turn become more able to give love to the world. And boy, does our world need a little more TLC.

Kama_sutra_1

So, take a look at the amazingly fun Kama Sutra gift sets that I just introduced in my store. Someone - I think it was my mom,  if you can believe that! - gave me the Weekender Kit some years ago and I've only kept very fond memories of that little box!!!  So,I thought that it was such a perfect fit to bring this additional form of succulent offering to The Succulent Wife's gift shop.

Kama_sutra_2

I think that this is such a great idea for a wedding gift - for someone that you know well enough and that would not interpret this the wrong way. Or as an anniversary gift: your own or another couple's, to re-invigorate things a little. You know...

Did you see the Lover's Paint Box kit. I have a colleague (single and dating) that made the really cute comment to the effect that, at least with these chocolate body paints, she knows that she'd get something out of the encounter.

Anyhow, just another little something to help spread the love. And no, you don't need to wait for Valentine's Day. Duh!

Gone with the High Fructose Corn Syrup

Single_orange_cream_2 It's wonderful news. The self proclaimed "little guys" of the food/beverage industry are leading the way. In this case, Jones Soda. This soda manufacturer has already differentiated itself in the market for, among other things, for featuring customer submitted images on its labels. That and their innovative flavor combinations helped build the brand. Now, they are making another statement by replacing High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) with Pure Cane sugar to sweeten their sodas.

I've long had an aversion to HFCS. Beverage manufacturers started using it in the 70's because it was less expensive than cane sugar, easy to store and extremely soluble (mixes well with a lot of things). It became big business for the large agricultural processors. Price fixing and the whole ugly thing went on with that but even more potentially harmful to the consumer is the fact that HFCS is made from genetically modified enzymes. Which probably come from genetically modified corn. Nice, huh? HFCS is nasty for all sorts of reasons that I won't get into (you can read the articles referred to below). It's insidious, found in so many prepared foods. This makes life quite complicated for many people with food allergies to corn. Jones_soda

Ok, so pure cane sugar is still sugar, but at least, it's real and it tastes better. So, all that to say, THANK YOU JONES SODA for your ideological move. As it now proclaims on its homepage "Corn is for Cars... Sugar is for Soda." Let's hope it makes an impact.

Very "Joli Jewelry"

I fell in love the second I saw this line. Colorful, eclectic,old-fashioned-in-a-modern-way, a little bit bohemian, it has everything to have me hooked...  I had to have them in my store!

Joli_jewelry_2

Jody Lyons is the designer for Joli Jewelry and she creates limited edition pieces by mixing vintage findings and new materials. Joli Jewelry’s materials of choice are semi-precious stones, deco glass, enamel work, metal stampings or findings, mother of pearl, 1920’s, 1930’s, 1940’s, 50’s or 60’s vintage plastics and Bakelite Celluloid. These materials are masterfully combined into sculptural and textured compositions, each becoming a little piece of art in its own right, to wear as a pin or necklace. We love the quirky juxtaposition of the vintage materials and bright colors.

Joli_jewelry

The part I like best is the versatility of the pieces. Thanks to a clever “slider” that attaches to the pin, the Joli Jewelry brooches easily convert into necklaces. I sell them with a black satin cord necklace. Very elegant. You can also attach the pins/brooches to the black bead cuff bracelet.  See how a Joli Jewelry brooch perfectly adorns an otherwise ordinary piece?  See the collection on The Succulent Wife's website right here.

This is versatility in jewelry at its very best!

Love, love, love it.

I said that already.

Retro Electro Funky Hostess Aprons

I love, love, love these aprons by Retro Electro! Each is a one-of-kind piece, totally handmade from an eclectic mix of vintage and modern fabrics. They are brand new on The Succulent Wife.

Aprons2_2

Aprons1_2

Sarah Mortensen and Roxanne Isaac meet as bartenders in 2001. They went searching for something fun to wear to work. They quickly discovered there weren't any cool aprons on the market; all were generic looking and "made overseas." So out of necessity, they decided to collaborate on a distinctive line of aprons. And these girls managed to design aprons that are not only unique and adorable, but playful AND sexy at the same time. The Succulent Wife and staff had a great time unpacking this shipment. Indeed, a young male colleague (who, for his own safety shall remain unnamed) exclaimed “Wow, what do you wear underneath?” Well, that would totally be up to you and to how and whom you prefer to entertain!

Oh, and what a fun hostess gift, don't you think?

Check them out here and wear them succulently!

GohGirl

The Goh Girl line is created by creator & designer Liz Goh. She was actually working a "cubicle" job related to her hard earned psych degree when her Goh Girl alter egos began manifesting. Goh Girl's cute, imaginative illustrated creatures are actually secret agents, each with a special power.

The Goh Girl line currently includes Women's and baby tee-shirts and note cards. Secret Agent Pretoria's powers help her hold and grip her enemy, while Agent S. chases down non-recyclers and Agent Tokyo's abilities allow her to propel herself out of danger. Meet all the other secret agents here at The Succulent Wife.

I guess that the psych degree does help discern particular character and personality traits. Liz' creativity makes them special.

The only time!!!

A friend of mine just had me notice that at three minutes and four seconds after 2 AM on the 6th of May this year, the time and date will be:

                                                 02:03:04   05/06/07

This will never happen again!

Well, we could say that of any passing second in our lives, but this one is just numerically cool!!
