Rain Forecasting Umbrella

Rainforecastingumbrella_2

Well, I live in Las Vegas where we have more than 300 days of sun a year. I use an umbrella maybe once a year and hardly ever check the weather. That is very unlike my days of living in Montreal where the weather forecast would dictate our every activity. Which is why I totally get the usefulness of this umbrella. How utterly clever! The Forecast Umbrella is embedded with wi-fi technology that pulls timely weather info from the Internet. The more intense the glow of the handle, the more ardent the umbrella's calling for you to take it along at that moment. Only a concept prototype, but I am buying them as gifts as soon as they are available!

Defendius Door Chain by Art Lebedev

Haha. Love the clever take on this door chain lock. The involved process of unlocking this door would certainly give one enough time to think about whether they want to let their visitors in or not. Or at least, this contraption would be excellent to legitimately formulate the excuse:  "Sorry, I can't let you in right now. I'm stuck in a maze..."

To note, also ideal for keeping that new crush that you're so infatuated with from leaving your premises too early. Probably doesn't meet fire codes though, huh?

InnocentKids.co.uk - Adorable Children's Website

Developed for the Innocent Smoothies kid audience, this site is adorably... innocent. I don't think that we have Innocent Smoothies here in the U.S. but that does not prevent any kids on this site of the pond to visit this wholesome yet uber cool website.

It has everything from factoids (did you know that you will swallow 14 bugs in your sleep over the course of a year?), to recipes, games and experiments. My favorite element is the grown-up alert button that immediately switches the page over to a fabricated encyclopedia page. Yes,  go ahead and think that you can fool us parents.

Innocentkids_copy

Hope your wee ones enjoy! I'd say this is perfect healthy fun for kids ages 6 to 12.

I don't need mention the obvious branding messages in the website. This InnocentKids.com site provides an unobtrusive and entertaining way for the younger set  to familiarize itself with the brand. It speaks authentically, in keeping with the brand's tone of voice, so it passes my test.

The Designer Behind the Google Logo and How She Approached it...

Ever wonder who designed that Google logo? I have.  It hardly looks designed at all. Ends up that there’s lots of reasoning and planning behind those six little letters in primary colors.
Googlelogodesign_3
Here’s an excerpt of Ruth Kendar’s (yes, she’s the one, the Google logo designer) interviewed by Phillipp Lenssen.

“I was teaching design at Stanford University in 1999 when I was introduced to Larry Page and Sergei Brin by a mutual friend at Stanford. They were looking at designers to design their logo and website and I was asked to present them with some preliminary design ideas. They liked my approach and design style and I was hired to design both.

Google wanted to convey that it was as a search provider first and foremost. It offered fast, comprehensive, and above all trustworthy search results. It was innovative, algorithmically complex yet incredibly simple to use. Furthermore, Google as a brand should repudiate all things corporate, conventional or complacent.

In the end this particular logo was selected because it reached its goal in many levels:
-    It was playful and deceptively simple. The design subtle as to look almost non-designed, the reading effortless. The colors evoke memories of child play…"

Ah, I do love learning something new every day.

Yeah for Nordstrom's - One Holiday at a Time!

Via The Consumerist by Carey Greenberg-Berger

"Nordstrom has conquered the urge to celebrate Christmas before Thanksgiving. The retailer announced its decision to respect the calendar and common sense by hanging signs declaring that they will wait until the day after Thanksgiving, the earliest acceptable moment, to display their Christmas decorations. The vainglorious announcement is an important indicator that Nordstrom's competitors have overdone the unseasonable cheerfulness shtick".

VW's New Campaign - Blatant Acts of Road Joy!

I've been waiting for these commercials to appear on YouTube before I shared this with you... LOVE this new campaign recently launched by VolksWagen Canada. It promotes... Road Joy!

The campaign is actually deeper than just the cheery commercials that you can view below. Indeed, if you go to this website, www.vwroadjoy.ca and enlist to carry out one blatant act of Road Joy, you earn the right to buy the VW Jetta or the VW Golf at a slightly more appealing price. Besides those depicted in the commercials, some other blatant acts of Road Joy include "meter over feeder" (leave some free minutes for the person rolling into your parking spot after you) and "Dust Grafitti" (write something nice on a needs-to-be-washed car).  The only part that saddens me is to witness how little the Acts of Road Joy counter has moved since the campaign was launched. For all its viral potential, I'm not sure it's catching on...  Sniff.

Radiators as Food Warming Device

Radiator_heater_2

Too Clever! I love this cool design that accommodates a century old idea. There's a little enviro-friendly touch to this as well. From Yanko Design:

As winter’s cold creeps in, we all revel in the little things to keep cozy. The Natural Wave is ceramic plate that fits over an old school radiator. The heated plate keeps your drinks and snacks warm without having to use additional power and energy like a microwave or oven. Pretty ingenious and if anything, it makes those old rusty radiators look a lot better. (Designer: Byung-seok You)

Next, the clothing dryer rack version...

Beyond Motherhood - Flexible Job Opportunities for Moms

Beyondmotherhoodcom

I love this new service & website launched by Shannon Davis. How clever and how needed! Her cute and functional website, www.beyondmotherhood.com, creates a network that brings together talented applicants and in-need-of-help employers. Having had a foot in both worlds I certainly appreciate the potential for such a network.

In Shannon's own words:

Beyondmotherhood.com is a new niche job board that connects employers with the “untapped” workforce, stay at home moms. There are thousands of educated and experienced moms nationwide looking for flexible/part-time opportunities, and Beyondmotherhood.com wants to connect them with employers.  Some moms are looking to get out of the house a few hours a week and earn a extra money….while others are looking for a stepping stone to a full-time opportunity in the future.  Beyondmotherhood.com is for ALL moms, with ALL types of skill sets. Employers are as diverse as the moms and are posting both work from home and on-site opportunities. Register today at www.beyondmotherhood.com!”

BeyondMotherhood is still in launch mode and is looking for both applicants AND employers. Please share this great tool with stay-at-home moms that might need the occasional change of scenery (oh, and the extra income is nice too!) and to potential employers that need that extra little bit of help in certain specialty areas.

Congratulations Shannon!

lululemon athletica in Las Vegas!

I'm thrilled to have hosted one of the first lululemon events in Las Vegas. It happened in the form of a "kitchen party" - aka a home shopping party - held in my very own...kitchen. Sue and Heather, the lovely and gracious lululemon representatives in Las Vegas brought in delicious munchies from Whole Foods and ordered lululemon clothing for our guests to try on. This party served as an event to raise brand awareness before the store opens in a couple of months.

Papier D'Armenie - The BestEST Natural Air Freshener

I have been using the Papier d' Armenie for over 20 years. Maybe more. It dates me, I know!!. And, until just now, it never dawned on me that I should share this magical product until I used it today and found that I was down to my very last sheet... Oh no!

Papier I replenish my supply of Papier D'Armenie every time I visit my hometown, Montreal. I know where to find it there but have never seen it in any store in the US, although I know it's bound to be sold somewhere... (Actually, I just found it on Amazon.com and you can buy it directly from the  product link here or the link in the left column).

Anyhoo, if I can't find it in stores in the USA, it probably means that most of you don't know what it is, which is why I am so excited to be telling you about it. This natural air freshener does not come in a spray, or a candle or a plug-in. No. I comes in paper form. Huh? yep. The paper is soaked in an alcohol based solution whis is then passed through a natural saline solution so that it will burn slowly.

The Papier d'Armenie was invented 120 years ago to share the benefits of Benzoin.  Well know inPapier_brule Armenia. Benzoin is an organic compound that has been used for ages to perfume homes. It has been recognized since the time of antiquity for its antiseptic, healing and expectorant properties. It is also known to relieve the psyche of negative emotions and to eliminate all coarse emotions and thoughts. Well. I just really like that my home smells clean and fresh after I have toured the burning strips of Papier d'Armenie through the house.

Here are the very simple instructions on how to burn the Papier d'Armenie. You can imagine that you would want to create a ritual of burning these little leaves of paper. Cleanse that air!

Volksware - a New Perspective in Consumer Goods

Carpet2 I love the flux of creativity that our eco-challenges are creating. Take this Dutch brand (this is what they call themselves, a Brand, not a company) that is making us look at consumer products from another angle. Literally.

VolksWare means "people's product" or "product for people". The form of the product depends on the idea and concept behind the project. Volksware explores the function of today's consumer goods.

The Volksware carpet questions the effect of the over supply and mass production on the consumer. the cloth carpet represent a person's lifetime consumption of clothing. By, for convenience, it is sold by the yard.

Pink Ladies Taxis - For Women Only!

Pink It isn't always safe being chauffered around!  In London alone, 10 women are attacked each month after getting into an unlicensed mini-cab. No wonder that many women feel safer taking a taxi driven by a woman. Pink Ladies spotted a business opportunity, and created the UK's first women-only private car hire franchise. The Pink Ladies drive Renault Kangoos that are pink inside and out, making them highly visible. Passengers sign up as members, and fares are either pre-paid, paid by credit card or with a 'pink account', which is convenient for members and safe for drivers. Booking is done over the phone, and a text message is sent to the customer to let her know the vehicle is approaching, which means she doesn't have to wait outside. Drivers are trained in self-defense and will wait outside a customer's home after a drop-off to ensure she gets in safely.

Taxis_2

The phenomenon is spreading globally: there's recently launched Forsche in Bombay, whose taxis include conveniences like wet wipes and perfumed talcum powder to freshen up on the way to a work meeting, nail polish remover and nail clippers and women's magazines. Nice detail: Forsche's female founder is former amateur rally driver Revathi Roy. Expansion to Pune, and starting a driving school for women is next on her agenda (no website yet, unfortunately). In Moscow, Pink Taxi and Ladies Red Taxi are vying for female business. Still leaves a lot of cities to bring this service to!

New Bike Sharing Program in Paris – Velib.

Velib_logo  Bandeau

You have probably heard about this new bike sharing program launched in Paris ten days ago.  GivenVelib_information_importante_pour_l the traffic and parking problems in Paris, weaving around the city on a bicycle might be the most efficient solution for short distance commuting.

Velib is a new a self-service bike rental program where a user can pick up a bike at various designated stations (pick up and drop locations). Almost 20,000 heavy duty bikes and 750 stations are already peppered throughout the metropolis. One can rent a bicycle for an annual membership of 29 Euros or by the half hour at various rates ranging from 1 to 4 Euros. The first half hour is free. Yeah!

So far so good. No bike accidents in the first week and about 45,000 rentals a day already. A great above ground alternative to the Metro, especially in good weather. Oh, and the service is also available to tourists.

Fabulous Use of Persona Technique in Advertising

I love the concept of using personas to convey the personalities of brands or products and how these should resonate with their intended target markets.  We all saw how Apple did such a great job of these with the Mac and PC personas. Brilliant and I always look forward to seeing the new ads as they are released. I love all the tacky puns.

Here's a European version of another persona representation.  As you are watching this,  try guessing who the actor  represents.

Pure genius! And, where did they find this actor?

The Cheese Knife

Cheese_knife1 Although this is called the Cheese Knife, I bought this knife for my 10 year old daughter who loves to help out in the kitchen but is very afraid to work with sharp blade knives. I remember being morbidly fearful of knives at her age as well.  This "Cheese" knife is perfect. It allows her to merrily cut through veggies, tofu , fruit, bread and... cheese with ease. This will allow to perfect her knife wielding techniques so that she'll be a pro when the time comes to use the real thing.

The Cheese Knife website actually sells the benefits of this knife as a great tool to use on anything that typically sticks and leaves a residue on a regular knife. So besides cheese, they mention eggs and pasta and that sort of thing. It's dishwasher safe, heat and stain resistant and FDA approved. Woohoo.

Seriously, this was a great buy for my novice cook. And, I might use it on cheese too.

Web Design with Succulence?

I was honored to be called upon by my Web gurus at Indextree.com when they asked me to act as  creative director for a client of theirs, to help conceptualize the website. The company provides Lipodissolve treatments. A little research for websites in that category revealed very bland and ordinary - sometimes garish - sites. All cliche images and stock photos. Of course, i wanted to do something different and, shall we say bodacious and succulent? That service category which is all about the quest for beauty just seemed to scream out for that.

Here's what I came up with as the main concept. A classic 16th century painting of a nude in a semi modern frame. The little petal icons on the body are hotspots that reveal a descriptive message about the targeted area and the Lipodissolve procedure.  The lines of the frame can dictate the style of the graphic elements throughout the site and on printed collateral too. Elegant, classic yet with a modern interpretation.

Eurydice

Personally, I think that one needs to take risks to get noticed nowadays given that we are constantly in a whirlwind assault of information and Web addresses and email addresses and blogs and 800 numbers and passwords and... things... to remember, who is going to notice you if you do not make yourself distinctive. Huh? Who?

Here , I would like to take a quick survey and KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. Please post a comment and let me know what you think:  Is it too risque? Will it turn away customers because it's the image of a very nude... nude? Will it get attention? Is it appropriate? Personally, I quite like the juxtaposition of old classic art with "new" interactive Flash imagery.

Hope the client likes it!

Delectable Summer Refreshment: Fresh Mint Tea

My kids and husband clamor for this. And it's sooooooooo easy to make. I buy a pack of fresh mint leaves at Trader Joe's (you know, my second home). It's packed full of mint leaves, 2 ounces worth at a whopping $1.39. All that one needs to do is to remove the stems, place the leaves in a teapot, add boiling water and steep for about 5 minutes. I actually steep the same leaves a second time and since my teapot is small, I go through two rounds of this. I add stevia to sweeten. It complements the mint flavor very nicely and doesn't add any calories. So this is actually a totally guilt-free drink. My kids like it cold, over ice. I like it hot. The whole two ounces of mint yields about 2 to 3 quarts of fresh mint tea.

Mint_tea Mint_tea_pot

Of course, I prepare this because it is simply delicious, but wow, there are actually health benefits to it too. Mint has long been known for its ability to calm up stomachs and to sooth the digestive tract. It has other benefits too, but you can do that research on your own. And, shhhhh, don't tell the kids that it might be good for them.

Try it and let me know what you think!

LuluLemon Athletica, my Favorite Yoga Wear Brand

Ll_homepage

I was introduced to lululemon by my sister, Liza, a brilliant ballerina, now yoga and Pilates instructor, among other things...  She took me shopping in the lululemon store in Montreal for the first time about 4 years ago. We don’t have a lululemon store here in Las Vegas and I guess that my sense of withdrawal is what prompted this post. Every time I go back to visit (Montreal being my hometown), I make sure to drop by the store and check out what’s new. No matter what time of day, the store is always packed with items quite literally flying off the shelves.

Why do I like this company’s athletic clothing? Well, I like their designs, colors, fit, quality, thoughtful details (like that little pocket that fits a single key). I like the chafe-free flat seams and the wicking/quick dry fabrics. The staff is always cheery and the store’s atmosphere uplifting. I guess that I was subconsciously noticing something imperceptible too in each store visit, like the “energy”.  Indeed, here is an excerpt from the corporate culture page of the lululemon website: “The LAW OF ATTRACTION is the fundamental law that lululemon was built on from its 1998 inception.  All our training and culture is predicated on developing great people so we can attract great people.  This is not marketing lip service.  Just ask the people who work with us.   Our vision is “to elevate the world from mediocrity to greatness” and we are growing so we can train more people and spread the word of the “The Secret” – which to us at lululemon is not so secret.” Working much on that premise myself, I like that.

Unfortunately the corporate lululemon website does not sell online. If they have a store in your city, check it out, if not, look for it when you travel or find an independent retailer that carries the brand. The items are somewhat pricey but will last forever. I still have all my original items and they are in perfect condition. Some of their best selling styles, now deemed to be classics, are still available. Here are some of my favorite pieces:

The Gather Tank  (left) is my favorite of all because it is long, almost tunic length and doesn't ride up. I don't have to adjust it down after every downward dog. The Whisper Tank is one of the first tops that I got at lululemon and has incredibly flattering fit. But if your breasts are slightly abundant, be warned, you will find yourself more sultry looking than intended during the twisting poses.

Ll_whisper_tank Ll_gather_tank

My favorite bottoms are the Hip Pants, with their flared bottoms,  help counter my  weighty hips and thighs. Oh well, I'm working on it... And in summer, I love their cropped pants. I would rather die than be found wearing shorts. Not gonna happen. Cropped pants is as far as I will go. Gotta protect the innocent.Ll_reverse_crop_pant

Ll_hip_pant_2

The Lulu Hoodie is another classic that I love. Even bought one for my 10 year old in XS adult size. It's still a little big for her and sleeves are way too long, but she loves it and relishes the fact that she will grow into it and still have it for years to come. I have a matching one. She loves that we can play twins. And this skirt, although i don't personally own one, a friend of mine does, and it makes for a totally adorable cover up over shorts or bathing suit or even as a cute ensemble with a coordinate tank or tee.

Ll_sweatshirt_2 Ll_pulse_skirt_2

I'm really partial to this brand and the fact that it's Canadian also makes me very proud. That and Cirque du Soleil.

Best Dessert Idea EVER & Under 90 Seconds to Prepare

Chocolate

I just hosted a ladies night at my home and served this and got the regular oooohhhhs and ahhhhs when the guests saw this dessert presentation. I serve this chocolate platter as the accompaniment to a lighter dessert. So easy, you’ll get it done in 90 seconds. OK, maybe 120 seconds if you count the time to pull out your platter and cheese knives (yep, cheese knives). All I do is get 2 or 3 kinds of chunk chocolate, usually found in the bulk bins. These Ghirardelli pieces are from Trader Joe’s but Whole Foods also has some good choices like white chocolate with cranberries or milk chocolate with hazelnuts. Simply lay these on a cutting board, garnish with fruit or berries of your choice and stick a hard-cheese knife in each piece of choco.

Guests love cutting off their own piece(s) sized according to their appetite or craving. And this amount of chocolate laid out for immediate and unmonitored consumption always gives off a flair of decadence. Huuummmmm. We like decadence.

Love this service: Jott.com

Jott_logo_copy_3

It's a very clever and oh-so-simple reminder service. Jott.com. Get it? As in Jot it Down? And it's absolutely free. Here's how it works: you call the provided 800 number. You leave yourself a message. The message is automatically transcribed in text and then delivered to your email inbox. You can Jott to yourself or to anyone else in your group.

Imagine how useful this is. If you're like me, you are invariably thinking about your crucial To Do List item and your latest genius idea when you are nowhere near your computer or calendar or notepad. I have been using Jott.com a lot now and have put my husband and kids on it as well. It is also particularly useful to get your whole team updated on a particular subject all at once. Kinda like an email CC list for your phone.

Love it.

Stevia Sweetener

Since most of the people that I mention it to have never heard about it, I thought it was time to share about the herb Stevia that I use as a sweetener. You probably have not heard about it for a good reason. It was not available here in the US until a few years ago.

Stevia is actually is South American plant that has been used by the Guarani Indians of Paraguay forStevia_2 hundreds of years. The Japanese started cultivating Stevia in the 1970’s as an alternative to artificial sweeteners, aka suspected carcinogens. But here in the US, the herb was banned in the early 1990’s at the request of an anonymous complaint. The FDA labeled stevia as an "unsafe food additive" and restricted its import. There is evidence that the FDA acted in response to industry pressure. I wonder from whom. Hummmm…

Stevia is 300 times sweeter than fructose (table sugar) so a little bit goes a long way. I pay $9.99 at Trader Joe’s for this little bottle but it contains 1120 servings. If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s in you neighborhood, you can buy it here from the manufacturer.

Anyhoo, I have been using Stevia for about three years now, mostly in my coffee, tea and lemonade. Actually, a Stevia lemonade is my favorite summer drink. My 2 second recipe is so simple: all I do is fill a glass with ice cold water, squeeze in a lemon (or a couple splashes of Realemon if you’re in a bind) and add a tiny sprinkle of Stevia. Mix and drink. And lemon juice is great for us blood type A’s. Stevia has a negligible effect on blood glucose and even enhance glucose tolerance, which might be an additional reason that I so enjoy drinking the Pure Invention Tea extracts that contain it. Makes me feel good and has a way of satisfied that craving for a “little something sweet”.

Ahhh, Stevia… You can read up on Stevia on Wikipedia and on SteviaInfo.

Aubergine is my New Black

Aubergine, Eggplant, Mauve, Plum, Purple, Mulberry, Pomegranate, Violet... Whatever you call it, this color rocks!

I bought this bag, pretty much as a last ditch attempt to replace my former one that was falling apart.  I hardly have time to shop, so scouring the malls to find my new favorite handbag was not an option at the time .  I have one handbag. Well, ok, I have several, but is really only ever use one. I don't have the time either to change handbags every morning. So, I do just use one handbag until that handbag is no more, cast away for being worn for having served me too well.

I have rediscovered Cole Haan (short tangent here) a few years ago when they came out with the GSeries and fell in love with their new look.  I think that it's at the affordable end of luxury goods, plus they don't plaster their logo all over their designs (see? It's hardly discernible on the photo). I've always said that if I'm going to walk around with huge logos on my stuff, that implies that I'm advertising YOUR brand, you pay ME. Not the other way around. Anyhoo, Cole Haan is subtle about their logo display and I like that.  The simple point of all this is that I bought the handbag that you see below while I was shopping at the Off 5th outlet with an out of town guest (always bring out of towners to the outlet malls). And, being on the lookout to replace my previous war torn Cole Haan, I spotted this little piece. I questioned the color ( apparently so did everyone else, or it wouldn't have been on that shelf!). But the bargain basement pricing had me give it careful consideration. I did take it home and looooooove it. The color absolutely goes with everything! Complements black, takes on brown tones when it needs to and harmonizes perfectly with all other colors. Who knew? Well, I know now, so thought I'd share and give you another color to pick for your accessories beyond the basic black.  You should try it!

10x10 / 100 Words and Pictures: How I Get my World News

"10x10™ ('ten by ten') is an interactive exploration of the words and pictures that define the time. The result is an often moving, sometimes shocking, occasionally frivolous, but always fitting snapshot of our world."

10_x_10

This has been my browser's homepage for a little over a year now. I don't think of as anything unique anymore until someone comes by my desk as I open my browser and asks me "What's that?" Then I realize that it is something special and is, in fact, how I get most of my world news (a lot of it is BBC).

You can read more this news feed here, but in a nutshell, the page shows you 100 thumbnail - 10 x 10 - photos that feature the top 100 news stories of the hour. Each thmbnail is clickable and reveals the underlying story in a series of listed links.  No human editors.

Try it. It will make you look very smart and wordly when someone walks by your desk and sees this displayed there. Smart, that a big part of your aura of style, no?

The SingelRingen - A Tool for Singles

Big_ring_photo I can't relate. Have been married (to the same wonderful man) for almost 19 years, but I know that a few of my friends might find this a useful tool -- in certain environments! Whether one celebrates being single or needs to "advertise" that the fact, the Singelringen (in Swedish, where the company is from) is a cute and potentially very effective concept. As the Web site says: "There are engagement rings and wedding rings, but there was no such thing as a ring for single men and women. Why not? If anyone needs to signal one’s civil status, it’s a Single."

The unisex ring is made of an outer band of turquoise acrylic melded to an inner band of solid sterling silver. It's $55.00 including postage and packing and comes with a unique registration number that one may use to join the Global Singelringen Community which also offers an international networking place for singles. They represent 50 nationalities. Hummmmm, almost makes me want to be single again. Almost almost.

Dr. Bronner's Magic Soap...Box

A little late in the game, I guess, but I just learned that there is a documentary film coming out in June about the life and Dr. Bronner.

Dr

You have all seen his soaps and other products and have spent some time in the soap isles trying toPeppermint_soap decipher the multiple messages, quotes and musings printed on every spare space of the label which covers every flat space of the soap bottle. Personally, I love the Organic Peppermint liquid soap which I pick up at Trader Joe's (my second home). Nothing better to wake up with in the shower in the morning, and feel the cool tingle that the soap brings to the skin. Wake Up!

Sometimes portrayed as somewhat of a lunatic, Dr. Bronner was actually also quite the avant-gardiste, shying away from chemically produced soaps and establishing his own plant to manufacture ecological castile soaps starting in the late 1940's. You can read more about that story here on the official Web site.

Dr. Bronner left behind a legacy that promotes a socially innovative and responsible company that participates in, among other things, charitable gifting, advantageous employee benefit plans, fair trade programs, no animal testing and in using hemp as sustainable alternative material.

Anyhoo, this should make for an interesting documentary. Since I have no false hope to ever seeing this being shown in Las Vegas, it's going on my Netflix list.

Birthday Wishes for Homeless Children

Birthday_wishes

I can't remember how I heard about this organization a while ago, but I remember making a note, knowing that I would want to refer to it in my yet-to-be blog. BirthdayWishes.org is a simple concept that certainly tugs at the heartstrings. www.BirthdayWishes.org is the only organization that brings birthday parties to homeless children. That's its  only mission.

Birthdays are important milestones in a child’s life and, Lisa Vasiloff, Karen Yahara, and Carol Zwanger, the three founders of the organization, believe that the gift of a birthday party provides normalcy, joy and hope in the otherwise unsettled lives of children living in homeless shelters. Indeed, for homeless children, birthday parties are a luxury that neither the parent nor the shelter can afford.

BirtdayWishes.org currently only operates in Massachussets but that should not stop those living out of the area to contribute to this cause. It's easy to help by donating items on the wish list http://birthdaywishes.org/wishlist.html, or shop your next Amazon.com purchase through the link on this page and Amazon.com will donate 10% of the order's total. That's quite the deal.

I think this needs to be launched in every major city. Who's in?

Pencils Smencils!

I bought my first Smencils  (for the kids,  I thought) when I visited one of Las Vegas' loveliest shops, the Las Vegas Paper Doll Stationery Shop owned by Anne Kellogg. Boy, does she ever have an eye for cute stuff.

Gourmetscentedpencils And, one of the totally cute and perfectly priced impulse items in the store are the Smencils ($2 ea.), scented pencils made out of recycled newspaper. As the company itself advertises, they are saving trees, one pencil at a time. Fannedtubes5_2 Indeed, it would appear that  Smencils are healthy for the environment. To be precise, Smencils are manufactured from recycled newspapers, environmentally friendly fragrances, recyclable ferrules and biodegradable erasers. Their Gourmet scents include Cherry, Cinnamon, Bubble Gum, Pineapple, Orange, Grape, Fruit Punch, Root Beer, Watermelon and Peppermint. Yummm! But, wait... no Chocolate? I'll need to write to them.

You can make your own Smencils with the Home Kit. Fun activity with the kids and it appears that this is a popular product for fundraisers as well.

Come Christmas, this will be the cutest stocking stuffer around!

Gimme Kama Sutra

The Kama Sutra Company was started over thirty years ago and while the inspiration for the company's name came from the 4th century Indian text on lovemaking - the Kama Sutra of Vatsayayana - their purpose is thoroughly modern.

The Kama Sutra Company's purpose is very focused: to help loving couples create joyful experiences of intimacy and tenderness. They believe - and I think it makes perfect sense - that through such intimacy, physically and emotionally healthier human beings emerge, who in turn become more able to give love to the wor
