Also called the "Art Terrorist" famous to daubing politicized images on buildings in London, L.A. and other metropolises.
Love this guy. Street art with a message that very few others can communicate in such a clever and impactful ways. Banksy's
anonymity obviously lends some charm and even credibility to the
stunts. Actually it seems that the targeted buildings enjoy being a
platform to convey the truly cynical yet truth-hurts messages.
Wikipedia says it best: “His artworks are often satirical pieces of art which encompass topics from politics, culture, and ethics. His street art, which combines graffiti with a distinctive stencilling technique, has appeared in London and in cities around the world.” I love his interpretations of classic paintings.
Banksy has also claimed responsibility for a number of high profile stunts, including the following: He put up a subverted painting in London's Tate Britain gallery. And, as we all heard about here, last August 2006, Banksy replaced up to 500 copies of Paris Hilton's debut CD, Paris, in 48 different UK record stores with his own cover art and remixes by Danger Mouse. Music tracks were given titles such as "Why am I Famous?", "What Have I Done?" and "What Am I For?". Several copies of the CD were purchased by the public before stores were able to remove them, some going on to be sold for as much as £750 on online auction websites such as eBay. The cover art depicted Paris Hilton digitally altered to appear topless. Other pictures feature her with a dog's head replacing her own, and one of her stepping out of a luxury car, edited to include a group of homeless people, which included the caption 90% of success is just showing up. That was too much fun. I wonder if he'll do anything now that she is actually in prison.
How 'bout this one that features the elephant in the room that everyone ignores?
Or this one that says a couple of things about our apparent disregard for impoverished countries:
I love that you can download his art for free: www.banksy.co.uk/shop/index.html. As he states on his website, everything in the shop is free. All the images can be downloaded to print or to use as a desktop. There is even this little subservient suggestion: “Prints look best when done on gloss paper using the company printer ink when everyone else is at lunch.”
This one certainly hits home these days:
