Do-it-yourself Paper Birds

I love this.  Family-friendly, adorable and free!

Very talented illustrator Josh McKible has created some downloadable Paper Bird templates that you simply need to print and assemble. Or, if you are at all graphically and artistically inclined, Josh also has a blank template for you to create your own paper bird. BTW, he is welcoming participation to create new bird designs.

See them here on www.McKibillo.com. Spirited little creatures, eh?

Japanese Boxed Lunches - Or why I feel like an incompetent mom!

Wow. I have never ever prepared lunch boxes like this. Ok, I admit, I have slipped cute love notes and the occasional Hershey Kiss, but this is nuts! Healthy AND cute (except for what's that blue stuff???) Inspiring and charming but absolutely out of control. Actually, I'm hoping that these are lunch boxes are commercially prepared. If any Japanese moms are actually making these for their kids,  I want to know what they're taking!  Via LikeCool.

Sand Animation Artist Ilana Yahav - Fun to watch

If you turn down the music, this is actually really amazing to watch. No room for error or even hesitation.

Read more about Ilana's art on her website and see more of her performances on YouTube.com, bien sur.

The Bad Gifts Emporium

See? You should have shopped with The Succulent Wife and you would have never needed this site. Oh well, live and learn.

Badgifts

Nobody wants their gifts, either given or received to end up here at the Bad Gift Emporium, but these tragic events happen. One can display or sell their "giftrocities" simply by posting the offending item(s) on the Web site. It appears that a private transaction can ensue when buyer and seller contact each other.  Humm, good luck.

This collection could very well launch a kitsch museum all by itself.

Interactive Christmas Game - Ring 'Ma Bells

I've been seeing lots of interactive Christmas games this season (you've probably seen the Elf Yourself game by Office Max? That's actually a cute one too although it takes foooooooorrrrreeeeeeever to load). In an attempt to be humorous or flippant, I found most agencies that put out these rich media cards or games have created perfectly distasteful work, focusing on bodily functions (yes, we have seen ALL of it, pooping elves included). I may sound prudish and old fashioned here, but I don't think that one needs to focus one bodily waste or sawing off reindeer's head to be funny. Indeed, Freud would have a field day with all these campaigns.

Handbells

In the meanwhile, here's an agency that came out with an entertaining and inoffensive yet fun game, the Handbell Hero, that you can actually share with your children. Their "attitude" comes in the messages that are displayed after you have played the game. It's flippant, but done smoothly and cleverly.  I actually chuckled.

Enjoy!

Line Rider - Seriously addictive little game

Have fun with this one: www.LineRider.com. You might well hate me for it later. I've already spent a good portion of my morning on trying to get my rider to make it unscathed through a single loop. All I have to say is GOOD LUCK! :-P

Fabulous Use of Persona Technique in Advertising

I love the concept of using personas to convey the personalities of brands or products and how these should resonate with their intended target markets.  We all saw how Apple did such a great job of these with the Mac and PC personas. Brilliant and I always look forward to seeing the new ads as they are released. I love all the tacky puns.

Here's a European version of another persona representation.  As you are watching this,  try guessing who the actor  represents.

Pure genius! And, where did they find this actor?

Banksy - The Anonymous Guerilla Graffiti Artist with a Message

Also called the "Art Terrorist" famous to daubing politicized images on buildings in London, L.A. and other metropolises.

Love this guy. Street art with a message that very few others can communicate in such a clever and impactful ways. Banksy's anonymity obviously lends some charm and even credibility to the stunts.  Actually it seems that the targeted buildings enjoy being a platform to convey the truly cynical yet truth-hurts messages.

Wikipedia says it best: “His artworks are often satirical pieces of art which encompass topics from politics, culture, and ethics. His street art, which combines graffiti with a distinctive stencilling technique, has appeared in London and in cities around the world.” I love his interpretations of classic paintings.

Carwreck Crudeoil

Banksy has also claimed responsibility for a number of high profile stunts, including the following: He put up a subverted painting in London's Tate Britain gallery. And, as we all heard about here, last August 2006, Banksy replaced up to 500 copies of Paris Hilton's debut CD, Paris, in 48 different UK record stores with his own cover art and remixes by Danger Mouse. Music tracks were given titles such as "Why am I Famous?", "What Have I Done?" and "What Am I For?". Several copies of the CD were purchased by the public before stores were able to remove them, some going on to be sold for as much as £750 on online auction websites such as eBay. The cover art depicted Paris Hilton digitally altered to appear topless. Other pictures feature her with a dog's head replacing her own, and one of her stepping out of a luxury car, edited to include a group of homeless people, which included the caption 90% of success is just showing up. That was too much fun. I wonder if he'll do anything now that she is actually in prison.

How 'bout this one that features the elephant in the room that everyone ignores?

Or this one that says a couple of things about our apparent disregard for  impoverished countries:

Feedtheworld2_3

I love that you can download his art for free: www.banksy.co.uk/shop/index.html. As he states on his website, everything in the shop is free. All the images can be downloaded to print or to use as a desktop. There is even this little subservient suggestion: “Prints look best when done on gloss paper using the company printer ink when everyone else is at lunch.”

This one certainly hits home these days:

Great Ad. How'd they do that?

I am NOT a gamer and hate every minute that my kids spend tapping away on their PlayStation controls. But this ad is quite the production...
